This Lime Kiln, dating back to the late nineteenth century, is the last remaining Lime Kiln that has survived in Gibraltar.

These 'ovens', which abounded in Gibraltar, were used to produce lime for which there was a variety of used, such as whitewashing buildings, painting water cisterns to maintain the water free of bacteria, and most importantly, in times of plague, for pouring the lime over the bodies in mass graves to prevent further contamination.
